Program Overview

The Strategic Human Resources for Leaders program from University of Stellenbosch’s Executive Development (USB-ED) offering is aimed to develop a transferable skills set for HR leaders. Rather than addressing traditional HR functions, the program focuses on a number of key business themes that organisations should address.

Who Should Attend

This program is aimed at high-potential HR leaders who are required to play a strategic role in solving business challenges. Participants should have a sound operational ability in HR practices.

Program Objectives

This course aims to equip delegates to:

  • Design and develop HR strategies that are aligned to business strategies and goals
  • Build leadership capacity in organisations and institutionalise effective governance, values and ethics
  • Facilitate organisational redesign to implement organisational strategy

Program Outlines

The program is designed around a number of business themes rather than traditional HR functions:

  • HR Strategy: the HR environment of business; the role of HR in building intangible assets; building and aligning HR strategy and value chain with business strategy; repositioning the HR function; high-level consulting skills; shared services and outsourcing
  • Globalisation: understanding the global environment of business and the impact on organisational design and people practices; the ability to do business in different cultures; the ability to design and manage expatriate policies
  • Leadership, Governance and Ethics: key global leadership issues; evaluating and building organisation and individual leadership capacity; the role of HR in corporate governance; institutionalising leadership values and ethics

Program Prerequisites

A post-grade 12 qualification with at least 4 years of experience in a senior HR role is required. The sponsoring organisation should ensure that the candidate has sound HR leadership potential.

Assessment

Strategic HR for Leaders program participants are assessed through an assignment that involves the development and submission of a project plan by a group of (maximum) 5 participants. Assignments must be submitted within 6 weeks of program completion.

Delivery Methods

This course utilises the following approaches:

  • Practical sessions, case studies and an open clinic session for discussion of practical topics relevant to delegates’ specific organisations
  • Practice feedback sessions with volunteers

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of participation from the University of Stellenbosch.

Spanning over 22 years, Ken Ironside’s career has covered all aspects of human resources management – from training and development through industrial relations. Ken’s core expertise areas also include business strategy, as well as public affairs. He has held specialist, line management, and generalist positions across a number of industries. Ken has been lecturing at tertiary level for a number of years, and is passionate about developing people and helping businesses align their human resources strategy with their competitive vision.
