Course Objectives:

To enable participants to develop their writing skills and adopt effective strategies in practicing professional and correct writing.

Expected Accomplishments:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and analyse different English texts.
  • Use correct English forms, sentences, texts and style appropriately.
  • Learn and construct correct and meaningful sentences and language patterns.
  • Master writing paragraphs and essays and tackle grammar trouble spot areas.
  • Summarise different general and business English texts.
  • Navigate the Internet and learn how to use language patterns and style correctly.
  • Write memos and reports.
  • Learn spelling and punctuation marks.
  • Learn characteristics of effective writing.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of business English and pre-intermediate level of general English.

 

Course Outline:

Sentence Construction

  • Learning how to use cohesive devices to construct all sorts of effective language patterns needed to produce coherent sentences and texts.Summary Making
  • Learning the strategies of summary making and using transition language devices to formulate cohesive texts bearing in mind the basic points included in the original text.Paragraph Writing

 

  • Helping CAT nominees and other staff write effective and coherent paragraphs with topic sentences, support ideas and concluding sentences.Essay Writing
  • Learning the art of writing an integrated and coherent essay based on:a. Introduction with a thesis (central idea) and clarification of essay main point.b. Body: 1st support paragraph, 2nd support paragraph, 3rd support paragraph.c. Conclusion: summary paragraph
  • Effective Writing Style
  • Clarity, correctness, conciseness, completeness, courtesy.

 

Delivery Method:

Instructor - led classes with learner-learner interactive oral and written performances and project work.
