To provide participants with the fundamental tips and strategies pertaining to the process of developing effective reading speed skills.

• Realise the significance of fast reading.
• Practise skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive reading skills
• Use the SQ3R reading method to speed read, analyse and comprehend texts
• Develop the ability to concentrate on reading
• Adopt effective reading strategies in reading comprehension

Prerequisites:

A reasonable Pre-Intermediate or Intermediate level of English.

 

Course Outline:

• The importance of fast reading
• Achieving good reading comprehension through: skimming, scanning, decoding and encoding of reading texts.
• Complex reading, grouping words .
• Nonprose reading
• Expository prose reading
• Practice with newspaper
• Surveys and/or questionnaires on developing reading speed reading habits
• Methods of speed reading: the hand, the hop, the zig-zag or loop
• The SQ3R reading techniques
• Reading exams and quizzes
• Clozed reading passages
• General tips for increasing reading speed

 

 

Delivery Method:

Instructor-led classes with presentations/demonstrations, task-based written activities, drills, communicative role-plays, paired work, group work and individual performances.
